So, you have a domain name, you have a host, you have a complete site and now you need to get the whole thing onto the World Wide Web. Most of the simple website applications will walk you through the process if not simply publish your site with the click of a button. You'll need some information from the printout I asked you to make in the first step. Or, if you bought your domain and your hosting services from the same provider, they will probably take care of all the details for you.
If you have to fill in the blanks when it comes time to "set up your host" don't panic. Here are some simple answers:
The URL is "Uniform Resource Locator" it is your address on the Internet. In the case of this website, the URL format is http://www.makeasimplewebsite.com
The Hostname is the address of your server, in this case, www38.a2hosting.com
Upload method: in this case I will use "ftp" or "File Transfer Protocol" because it is fast.
Username: this will be the username you signed up with, or the one your host gave you
Password: not to be confused with any other password, this is the password that you chose or that your host assigned you when you signed up with your hosting services
doc root: is the location your site lives with your hosting service, in this case it's /www/makeasimplewebsite.com/
subfolder: is made available if you are hosting multiple sites within your own domain
If you have two domain names that you want to go to the same website (a studio name and your own name) choose which one you'd like published as your "URL" The other one will be redirected by your host to the website (ask them to help you do this until you learn how), so in my case my website is found at www.sevenscrolls.com. However, if you put www.pattyolds.com into the address bar, it will be redirected to www.sevenscrolls.com. If you still have questions, contact your host service. They should be able to walk you right through it. That's why you paid them the big bucks.
